Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)
The tabernacle or sacred tent of their Divine King, with the camp of the Levites around it (see on Nu 3:38), formed the center, as does the chief's in the encampment of all nomad people. In marching, this order was adhered to, with some necessary variations. Judah led the way, followed, it is most probable, by Issachar and Zebulun [Nu 10:14-16].

The chapter gives every tribe the same four things: a side of the camp, a captain, a neighbour to pitch beside and a number. Genesis 49 had weighed the brothers one by one, and Numbers 2 assigns them ground and counts their men.

John Gill notes that his host means the whole tribe, every man of twenty and over, here and in every entry of the chapter. The north camp totals 157,600 and brings up the rear. Naphtali supplies 53,400 of it.
