Judah camps on the east, “toward the sunrise”, a precedence that rests on Genesis 49:10, “The scepter will not depart from Judah”. Numbers 7:12 gives its leader, Nahshon son of Amminadab, the first day of the dedication.

The men who counted the tribes in chapter 1 now command them. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that the twelve census leaders were made captains, owing the post to their hereditary headship. Nahshon's 74,600 is the figure of 1:27 unchanged.
