on Numbers 7:4-9

The carts are divided by what each Levite family carries, two for the Gershonites and four for the Merarites, who carry the boards, bars, pillars and bases. The Kohathites receive none, since “they were to carry on their shoulders the holy objects”, so the ark and holy furniture travel on men and never on wheels. At 2 Samuel 6:3-7 that rule is set aside and a man dies for it.

Moses had been held to the pattern shown on the mountain, and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown suggest he waited for word before taking gifts that pattern had left unmentioned. God accepts the carts and oxen and assigns them by the weight of each clan's load. Clarke reads it as the most carts for the heaviest loads.
