Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)
The tabernacle or sacred tent of their Divine King, with the camp of the Levites around it (see on Nu 3:38), formed the center, as does the chief's in the encampment of all nomad people. In marching, this order was adhered to, with some necessary variations. Judah led the way, followed, it is most probable, by Issachar and Zebulun [Nu 10:14-16].
This site's exposition
On the west side shall be the standard
on Numbers 2:18-19
The west belongs to Ephraim, and Ephraim is the younger of Joseph's two sons. Genesis 48:14 has Jacob crossing his hands to lay the right on the younger head, and the camp is arranged on that blessing, with Ephraim named first and Manasseh placed under him. Psalm 80:2 calls on God before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, which is this standard and its three tribes, the camp that moved directly behind the tabernacle.
The record, by era
The Puritans and the Awakening1 voice
On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim, according to their armies,.... It was in the rear or behind, consisting of his tribe, and of the tribes of Manasseh and Benjamin, divided into several companies, and extended four miles, as the above Targum.
