the villages with their fields

on Nehemiah 11:25-36

The chapter widens from Jerusalem to "the villages with their fields" (11:25). Judah's towns run from Kiriath-arba, the old name of Hebron, "from Beersheba all the way to the Valley of Hinnom". Benjamin's run from Geba through Michmash and Anathoth to "Lod, and Ono" and "the Valley of the Craftsmen".

Some of the people of Judah lived in Hazar-shual and in Beersheba and its villages. Hazar-shual stands beside Beersheba in Joshua's list at Joshua 15:28, and verse 30 makes Beersheba the southern bound of the settlement. Judah settled from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.
