The men of Judah trace through Perez to "468 men of valor," and the men of Benjamin through Sallu to "928 men." Genealogy here does legal and military work, naming households that can prove their place and men fit to defend it.

Sallu son of Meshullam

Sallu son of Meshullam also heads the descendants of Benjamin at 1 Chronicles 9:7, where his ancestors differ from the names given here. Clarke explains: Chronicles counts those who came with Zerubbabel, and this chapter adds those who came with Ezra and Nehemiah. The lists record two moments.

Those of Judah all descended from Perez, or Pharez, that son of Judah of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came. And, though the Benjamites were more in number, yet of the men of Judah it is said (
