The Levites total 284, and the gatekeepers count 172, doorkeeping entered as a numbered office. Verse 17 keeps a liturgical detail the register did not need: Mattaniah, of the line of Asaph, "led in thanksgiving and prayer." For one verse a name list records who led Israel's praise.

Akkub, Talmon, and their associates
Akkub and Talmon are gatekeeper houses of the first return at 7:45, and they keep the gates again at 12:25. The earlier roll at 1 Chronicles 9:22 counts 212 gatekeepers, appointed to their trust by David and Samuel the seer. This verse counts 172.
