the villages with their fields

on Nehemiah 11:25-36

The chapter widens from Jerusalem to "the villages with their fields" (11:25). Judah's towns run from Kiriath-arba, the old name of Hebron, "from Beersheba all the way to the Valley of Hinnom". Benjamin's run from Geba through Michmash and Anathoth to "Lod, and Ono" and "the Valley of the Craftsmen".

Hadid is counted with Lod and Ono, 721 men together, at the first return in 7:37. The next verse names Lod and Ono, so the three towns stand close together in both registers. The settlement kept the old groupings.
