And his brethren, chief of the fathers, two hundred forty and two,.... That is, the brethren or relations of Adaiah: and Amashai; called Maasiai, 1Ch 9:12, whose lineage is traced here through Azareel, Ahasai, Meshillemoth, to Immer.

The priestly roll names Seraiah as "the chief official of the house of God." It counts by function: 822 who did the work at the temple, 242 leaders of families, and "128 mighty men of valor". The temple's daily service and the city's defense drew from the same priestly families.

Adaiah son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah

1 Chronicles 9:12 gives the same Adaiah son of Jeroham with a shorter line, passing from Jeroham straight to Pashhur and Malchijah. Gill takes the 242 as Adaiah's own kinsmen, the heads of their fathers' houses. This verse adds three generations, Pelaliah, Amzi and Zechariah.
