8 notes on this verseEveryone who is under the law reveres Moses. But when one crosses over to the gospel from the law, by the changed observance the reverence is also changed. It is just as the apostle says, "For I through the law have died to the law so that I may live for God; I was crucified with Christ, but now I live; not I, but Christ lives in me."

The comparison is exact, since Exodus 14:31 says after the sea that the people believed the LORD and His servant Moses. The same is now said of Joshua after a river. The successor is confirmed by the same kind of act that confirmed the man he follows.

But let us see how our Jesus my Lord, leader and ruler of this latter people, is "exalted" in the sight of all the descendants of the sons of Israel. On that day the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of Israel,.... Made him great and honourable in their esteem, by doing what he foretold would be done, dividing the waters of Jordan, drying up the river to make a passage for them through it, as on dry land: and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life; had a reverend esteem of him, and affection for him, and yielded obedience to him all his days; see Exo 14:31.
Those are feared in the best manner, and to the best purpose, who make it to appear that God is with them, and that they set him before them. Those that are sanctified are truly magnified, and are worthy of double honour.
