Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Old and New Testaments (1832-1869)
It was the ninth month - Or, our December, a time when rain fails heavily in Palestine: four months, therefore, after Ezra’s arrival in Jerusalem (compare Ezr 7:9). The street - Rather, “the court,” the “broad,” “spacious, place” (compare the 2Ch 29:4 note).
This site's exposition
made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem
on Ezra 10:7-9
The proclamation carries a deadline: three days to gather at Jerusalem, or forfeit both property and standing in the congregation of the returned exiles. The men of Judah and Benjamin keep it, and the narrator names the season along with the crowd, the ninth month, the coldest and wettest weeks of the Judean year. The assembly sits in the open street of the house of God trembling for two things at once, the matter before them and the great rain falling on them while they wait.
