And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house: they have eyes to see, and do not see: and ears to hear, and do not hear: because they are a rebellious house. Because we translate it as: You dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, the LXX (Septuagint) has put: You dwell in the midst of their iniquities. But from what follows, Because they are a rebellious house, we understand that the preceding sentence also agrees with this verse.

The word of the Lord opens a new section with the same formula that will introduce four more oracles across this chapter, each one triggering its own sign or explanation. Ezekiel dwells, as the Lord names it, in the midst of a rebellious house, people who have eyes to see and do not see, ears to hear and do not hear. Clarke reads the diagnosis as spiritual rather than physical blindness, a people surrounded by evidence they refuse to read rightly rather than a people lacking evidence. The charge sets up everything that follows, since words alone have failed this house, the Lord next turns to an acted sign they cannot help but watch.

The word of prophecy, as the Targum; the vision of the cherubim being over, this, very likely, immediately followed upon the former; though the exact time of the prophecy cannot be fixed, because the date is not given; it must be between the sixth month of the sixth year of Jehoiachin's captivity, Eze 8:1; and the fifth month of the seventh year, Eze 20:1.
