Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, is killed through a ruse at the hands of Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon, the Beerothite. And, when they announced the news to David and showed him the head of his enemy, they were killed by David, who said, "Wicked men have slain a just man in his own house upon his bed." Ish-bosheth was certainly not a just man, and yet he is called a just man because he was innocently killed.

who hath redeemed my soul

on 2 Samuel 4:9-12

David answers by naming the earlier case himself: the man who told him Saul was dead expecting a reward was taken and killed at Ziklag, 1:14-16, for laying hands on the Lord's anointed. Ish-bosheth carried no such anointing, yet David judges the count that does apply, a righteous man killed in his own house on his bed, and rules the same way a second time within one book. He hands the sentence to his own young men rather than to Joab, and the killers' hands and feet are cut off and hung over the pool at Hebron while Ish-bosheth's head is buried in Abner's own grave, the general whose death opened this chapter.

hung their bodies by the pool in Hebron

Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the hands and feet as the instruments of the crime. Albert Barnes notes that they were cut off after death and hung where all could see. The sight cleared David before Israel.

2 And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin: 3 And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) 4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet.

However men may canonize such methods of serving the church and the catholic cause, Christ will let them know, another day, that Christianity was not intended to destroy humanity; and those who thus think to merit heaven shall not escape the damnation of hell.

And they slew them - None ever more richly deserved death; and by this act of justice, David showed to all Israel that he was a decided enemy to the destruction of Saul’s family; and that none could lift up their hands against any of them without meeting with condign punishment. In all these cases I know not that it was possible for David to show more sincerity, or a stricter regard for justice.

slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet--as the instruments in perpetrating their crime. The exposure of the mutilated remains was intended as not only a punishment of their crime, but also the attestation of David's abhorrence.

Cut off their hands ... - After they were dead. Their hands and feet were hung up in a place of public resort, both to deter others and also to let all Israel know that David was not privy to the murder of Ish-bosheth.
