David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer

on 2 Samuel 8:7-12

The gold shields are dedicated to the LORD. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that David kept this practice, saving the spoil toward the temple his son would build. The same act keeps the law of Deuteronomy 17:17 against a king gathering silver and gold for himself, as John Gill notes.

First Chronicles 18:10 calls Joram Hadoram, and Barnes takes that name as the more likely one. Henry reads the visit of Joram as thanks to David for defeating Hadadezer and a request for his friendship. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown add that Toi sought David's protection.
