Barnes notes the word slain means pierced, and covers the wounded as well as the dead. Verse 18 gives the reason: “the men of Judah prevailed because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers”. Gill notes the Targum renders it reliance on the Word of the LORD.

Gill reads subdued as humbled and weakened, and the northern tribes stayed outside the rule of David's house. The word for prevailed can also mean grew strong. Judah trusted the LORD and set aside the arm of flesh.
