Commentary
6 notes on this verseWe know two psalms with the title "For Idithun," the sixty-first and the thirty-eighth. We think that the composition of the work is owed to David; that was given to Idithun for his use that he might correct the passions of his soul and also as a choral song to be sung in the presence of the people. Through it, also, God was glorified, and those who heard it amended their habits.

Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest
on 1 Chronicles 16:41-42
Heman and Jeduthun join Asaph as the second and third of the three principal singers Chronicles will name in full at 1 Chr 6:33 and 25:1, their courses fixed at Gibeon rather than at Jerusalem. Their charge to give thanks to the LORD because his mercy endureth for ever carries the refrain verse 34 just planted out to the second site as well as the first. Trumpets, cymbals and what the text calls musical instruments of God accompany them, and Jeduthun's own sons serve there as porters just as Obed-edom's kin do before the ark.

And with them,.... That is, with Zadok, and the priests with him at Gibeon: he left Heman and Jeduthun: or Ethan, two principal singers: and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name; see 1Ch 16:18. to give thanks to the Lord, because his mercy endureth for ever; to praise him for his benefits, flowing from his grace and mercy continually.
Matters being thus settled, and the affairs of religion put into a happy channel, (1.) The people were satisfied, and went home pleased. (2.) David returned to bless his house, resolving to keep up family worship still, which public worship must not supersede.
6 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. It was a glorious day when the ark of God was safely lodged in the tent David had pitched for it. That good man had his heart much upon it, could not sleep contentedly till it was done, Ps. cxxxii.
