David raids the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites, and the last name reaches back to the war sworn against Amalek in Exodus 17. Barnes places these peoples on the desert border toward Egypt. David leaves no one alive and takes the livestock, and Clarke calls it a complete extirpation.

The flocks, herds and camels fed David's men. Matthew Henry acquits David of cruelty toward the Amalekites and their neighbors, peoples long doomed. Adam Clarke calls the raids inhuman and without any word from God.
