A list - supplemental in character - of some chief officers of David, not mentioned before. The list cannot belong to a very late part of David’s reign, since it contains the name of Ahithophel, who killed himself during Absalom’s rebellion 2Sa 17:23. 1Ch 27:33 Was the king’s companion - or, “king’s friend,” as in 1Ki 4:5. Compare also 2Sa 16:17. 1Ch 27:34 After Ahithophel - i. e., next in counsel to Ahithophel: inferior to him, but superior to all others.

The chapter closes with the king's inner circle: “Ahithophel was the king’s counselor”, and “Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend”. Albert Barnes places the list before the later years of the reign, since it still names Ahithophel. Ahithophel later hanged himself when Absalom did not follow his advice.

This was a sufficient strength for the securing of the public peace and safety. Those that are Israelites indeed must learn war; for we have enemies to grapple with, whom we are concerned constantly to stand upon our guard against. He changed them every month; so that the whole number of the militia amounted to 288,000, perhaps about a fifth part of the able men of the kingdom.
