A second list follows the military one: officers over the tribes, ranked above the captains because their standing was older. Adam Clarke notes that Asher and Gad are missing from the record. Benjamin's officer is “Jaasiel son of Abner”, whose father opposed David's rise and died by Joab's hand.

Levi had its own officer, Hashabiah son of Kemuel. The house of Aaron, the priests, stood under Zadok as a separate charge. The list of tribes gives the priests and the other Levites each their own head.
