Benaiah is the man already known from the mighty men, and verse 6 says he “was mighty among the Thirty and was over the Thirty”. Asahel heads the fourth division, though he died by Abner's hand at the start of David's reign. The honor passes to his son Zebadiah.

Ira son of Ikkesh, from Tekoa, led the sixth division of 24,000 men. The Targum Adam Clarke cites calls the sixth month Elul. The turn of Ira closed the first half of the year of divisions.
