on 1 Chronicles 27:25-31

A civil list follows the military ones, with named overseers for the storehouses, fields, vineyards, olive and sycamore trees, herds, camels, donkeys and flocks. Two are named by their people, “Obil the Ishmaelite” over the camels and “Jaziz the Hagrite” over the flocks. They are foreign men managing crown property.

Ezri son of Chelub had charge of the field workers. John Wesley pairs his post with the storehouses of verse 25, one officer over the labor and another over the harvest put in store. Wesley sees the same pairing in the vineyards of verse 27.

This was a sufficient strength for the securing of the public peace and safety. Those that are Israelites indeed must learn war; for we have enemies to grapple with, whom we are concerned constantly to stand upon our guard against. He changed them every month; so that the whole number of the militia amounted to 288,000, perhaps about a fifth part of the able men of the kingdom.
