Revelation 16:1

A great voice out of the temple, the loudest possible authority since none could enter the sanctuary at 15:8, commands the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. The command comes from the temple itself rather than from a lesser messenger, marking the series that follows as God's own direct and final reckoning rather than an intermediate warning like the trumpets before it. The vials begin at once, without delay or further seal, the book's pace quickening as its judgments near their end.

Revelation 16:2

The first vial falls upon the earth and produces a noisome and grievous sore on the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image, the plague striking precisely those the third angel of 14:9-11 had warned, judgment matched exactly to the sin it answers. The sore recalls Exodus 9:9-11's boil, the sixth plague on Egypt, sent on Pharaoh's magicians who could not stand before Moses, the same pattern of a hardened power struck in its own flesh. The mark that promised the beast's protection becomes instead the very mark judgment reads to find its targets.

Revelation 16:3

The second vial turns the sea to blood as of a dead man, thick and corrupted rather than merely reddened, and every living soul died in the sea, a completeness beyond the second trumpet's third part at 8:8-9, the vials each intensifying their matching trumpet's partial judgment into a full one. The plague recalls Exodus 7:20-21's first plague on the Nile, and the main line reads the vial series as broadly following the exodus pattern, the final wrath on the world system built on the same plagues that freed Israel from Egypt's own tyrant. Total death in the sea leaves no refuge in the deep for those who refused the gospel of 14:6-7.

Revelation 16:4-7

The third vial strikes the rivers and fountains of waters, and they became blood, and the angel of the waters, a guardian named nowhere else but implied by such Old Testament figures as the angel of the winds at 7:1, breaks into praise rather than complaint, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. The ground of the judgment is stated as plainly as Scripture states any, they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink, for they are worthy, the punishment answering the crime in kind, a principle called lex talionis and traced through the prophets against Babylon itself in Isaiah 49:26. The altar itself, the place of the martyrs' cry at 6:9-11, answers in agreement, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments, heaven's own courtroom satisfied.

Revelation 16:8-9

The fourth vial falls on the sun itself, given power to scorch men with fire, an intensifying of natural order past its ordinary bounds rather than a plague of darkness like Egypt's ninth, and men were scorched with great heat. Their response is the chapter's own refrain and its most sobering feature, they blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues, and they repented not to give him glory, judgment correctly identified as God's own hand and still met with cursing rather than turning. Revelation 16:10-11

Revelation 16:15

In the midst of the gathering armies the Lord himself breaks in with a sudden first-person word, Behold, I come as a thief, the same warning given the church at Sardis at 3:3 and by Paul at 1 Thessalonians 5:2, now spoken at the very edge of Armageddon's field. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame is the book's third beatitude, a call to readiness pictured as a man caught undressed in public, garments here the righteous covering the overcomer keeps unstained through the tribulation's fire. The interruption is deliberate, heaven's own reminder that even amid the last battle's build the call to watchfulness never lapses.

Revelation 16:16

The kings are gathered into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon, har-Megiddo, the mount of Megiddo, a real location in the Jezreel valley where Deborah and Barak defeated Sisera in Judges 5 and where Josiah fell to Pharaoh Necho in 2 Kings 23:29, a plain that had already seen more decisive battles than any other ground in Israel's history. This site receives the geography as history and reads the gathering as a real and future muster, while the parking order forbids mapping any living nation or leader onto the armies named here. The name itself, drawn from a battlefield rather than invented, roots the vision in the same land the whole book of Revelation keeps returning to as the theater of its final acts.

Revelation 16:17-18

It is done: The seventh angel pours his vial into the air, and a great voice out of the temple, from the throne, declares gegonen, It is done, the same completed-action force as Christ's own tetelestai from the cross, the wrath of God now finished as fully as the atonement it answers. Voices, thunders, lightnings, and a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth follow, so mighty an earthquake, and so great, language of unprecedented scale matching Daniel 12:1's time of trouble such as never was and Matthew 24:21's tribulation the like of which has not been nor ever shall be. The formula, voices and thunders and lightnings, has recurred at each stage of the book's judgment series, 4:5, 8:5, 11:19, each occurrence larger than the last, arriving here at its final and greatest form.

Revelation 16:19-21

The great city is divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, a worldwide collapse rather than one city's ruin alone, and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath, the same cup she made the nations drink at 14:8 now returned to her own lips, measure for measure. Every island fled away, and the mountains were not found, the earth's very geography undone, and a great hail falls, every stone about the weight of a talent, roughly seventy-five pounds by the common reckoning, an intensifying of Exodus 9:22-25's seventh plague on Egypt past any bound nature has shown since. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, the chapter's refrain sounding one final time, unrepentant to the very last stroke of the wrath that the whole series has poured out.
