Psalm 81

Psalms 81:1-3

The Hebrew title, which this page's text does not show, reads To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph, the same Gittith heading carried by Psalms 8 and 84; the commentators read it as either an instrument brought from Gath or a tune tied to the winepress and the autumn ingathering. The call gathers the full choir of worship, timbrel, harp and psaltery together with the trumpet, into one command to sing aloud and make a joyful noise. The new moon named beside the solemn feast day points most of the bench toward the autumn festivals, the Feast of Trumpets at the new moon followed at the full moon by Tabernacles.

Psalms 81:4-5

The festival is fixed by statute, a law of the God of Jacob rather than a custom the people chose for themselves, ordained in Joseph, a name for the whole nation drawn from the tribe that rose to power in Egypt. The abrupt shift to the first person, where I heard a language that I understood not, is read by the commentators either as the psalm's own voice remembering Egyptian speech as a stranger's tongue or as the point where the poem passes into God's own address, which the rest of the psalm continues without another break. Delitzsch reads the line as the hinge of the whole structure, festival instruction opening straight into divine speech.

Psalms 81:6-7

God now speaks in his own voice across two exodus memories, relief from Egypt's burden and testing at the waters of Meribah, the place named in Exodus 17 and Numbers 20 where Israel quarreled over water. Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee recalls the cry of bondage answered in the exodus narrative, while I proved thee at the waters sets that same deliverance beside a trial the people failed. Selah closes the unit, the honest unknown of the Psalter's own notation, read variously as a musical pause or a call to weigh what has just been said.

Psalms 81:8-10

The song turns to direct exhortation, echoing the first commandment's own words, there shall no strange god be in thee, and grounding it in the same self-identification the law itself uses, I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt. Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it promises abundance sized to appetite, a generosity the people never tested at full stretch. Henry reads it as an open invitation still standing, not a threat but a wide door held out to a people who had already begun to refuse it.

Psalms 81:11-12

The invitation of the previous verses meets a flat refusal, Israel would none of me, and the judgment that follows is not fire or exile but abandonment to their own desire, I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust. Several commentators hear an echo of this same judicial handing-over in Paul's language at Romans 1, God gave them up, though Romans does not cite this psalm by name. They walked in their own counsels states the result plainly: the freedom Israel chose over God's statute became the very burden the exodus had removed.

Psalms 81:13-16

The psalm closes on an unfulfilled conditional, not a curse but a lost blessing: had Israel walked in his ways, their enemies would have been subdued and their adversaries turned back, sung as history that could have been and was not. Honey out of the rock recalls Deuteronomy 32:13's language for the same unearned abundance of the land, wheat and rock-honey together standing for provision beyond anything the wilderness itself could give. The final line, should I have satisfied thee, closes the psalm on God's own withheld generosity, offered still and refused by the very generation the exodus had rescued.
