Psalms 137:1-2

By the rivers of Babylon: By the rivers of Babylon sets the scene at the canals that watered the flat land around the city, where Jewish exiles gathered after Nebuchadnezzar's destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. There we wept when we remembered Zion, and the harps, the very instruments of temple praise, are hung silent on the willows rather than played, grief displacing worship rather than accompanying it. Henry notes the picture is deliberate: an instrument built for joy has no voice left in a land built to break it.

Psalms 137:3-4

The captors turn the exiles' grief into entertainment, they that carried us away captive required of us a song, asking for one of the songs of Zion, the temple hymns themselves, as mirth for a foreign court. The exiles' answer is the psalm's center, how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land, a question rather than a refusal: the songs belong to Zion's worship and cannot be performed as a captive's trick without becoming something else. Spurgeon reads the question as the whole psalm's key, worship torn from its place loses its voice even when the words are remembered perfectly.

Psalms 137:5-6

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem is a vow sealed with a self-curse, let my right hand forget her cunning and let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, the ancient way of guaranteeing sincerity by naming the cost of failing it. Jerusalem is set above my chief joy, ranked over every pleasure the singer might otherwise name, which is the answer the previous verses left open: the songs cannot be sung for captors, but loyalty to the city they belong to will not be surrendered either. Gill notes the vow turns the exiles' silence from despair into a form of resistance.

Psalms 137:7

Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom turns the psalm from personal lament to a plea against a specific nation, quoting Edom's own cry on the day Jerusalem fell, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. Edom, Jacob's brother nation by descent from Esau, did not merely stand aside but cheered the city's ruin, the charge the book of Obadiah sets out at length, verses 10 to 14 naming the violence done to a brother and the gloating over his disaster. The two texts stand together as the fullest biblical case against Edom, this verse the cry and Obadiah the oracle answering it.

Psalms 137:8-9

These are the hardest lines in the Psalter, and the site does not soften them or apologize them away: a shattered people ask God to repay Babylon in the same coin Babylon dealt, dashing infants named among the oldest and cruelest acts of ancient siege warfare. The bench carries several readings without a house verdict: most read it as a prayer handing vengeance to God rather than an act the exiles carry out themselves, the imprecation spoken and not enacted; others note the language matches what the prophets had already pronounced on Babylon in judgment oracles, Isaiah 13:16 and Jeremiah 51 among them, so the verse echoes a doom already spoken rather than inventing one. The gracious rule governs absolutely here: the verse is never enjoyed, never read as license, and never applied to any living person or people; it is Scripture recording the rawest cry of a people who had watched their own children treated the same way.
