Matthew 1:1-2

Matthew opens with Genesis 5:1's own formula, the book of the generation, turning Adam's toledot heading into a new book, a new beginning headed by a new Man. Two titles frame the whole Gospel before the list of names even starts, son of David for the king thread and son of Abraham for the promise to bless all nations in Genesis 22:18. Both lines of descent run their fourteen generations down to this one name, and the sources read the double title as deliberate, the whole genealogy answering both promises at once.

Matthew 1:3-5

Three of the four women Matthew names outside Mary appear in these verses, and none is a patriarch's wife by expectation. Tamar the Canaanite posed as a harlot to secure her right within Judah's own family in Genesis 38, Rahab was the Canaanite harlot of Jericho who hid the spies in Joshua 2, and Ruth was the Moabitess who came under Boaz's wing after Naomi's loss. The bench reads the four women together as an early signal that the King's own line runs through Gentile blood and open scandal, so that grace rather than pedigree carries the promise forward.

Matthew 1:6

The fourth woman is named by omission rather than by name, her that had been the wife of Urias, forcing the reader to remember Uriah the Hittite and the sin his name recalls from 2 Samuel 11 and 12. The bench reads the wording as deliberate, the evangelist declining to smooth David's worst chapter out of the King's own genealogy. Grace that reaches a king's adultery and a soldier's murder is the same grace that will reach Gentile magi and a Canaanite woman's daughter later in this book.

Matthew 1:7-11

From Solomon the line runs through Judah's kings to the exile, and verse 8 quietly telescopes it, since between Joram and Ozias Matthew drops three names that 2 Kings records, Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah, likely to hold the count at fourteen and possibly to pass over the house that Ahab's daughter Athaliah had corrupted. Jechonias, also called Jehoiachin, closes the second fourteen at the deportation itself, the royal line now a captive in Babylon. The bench reads the compression as ordinary ancient genealogical practice, since begat regularly means was ancestor of in a Hebrew king list, not as an error in the record.

Matthew 1:12-16

The third fourteen runs from the captivity to Christ through names largely unknown outside this list, governors and priests of a line stripped of the throne yet still faithfully recorded. Verse 16 breaks the chapter's rhythm on purpose, since every other line reads begat, but of Joseph it reads of whom was born Jesus, refusing to say Joseph begat him. The bench reads the shift as Matthew's own guard for the virgin birth he states outright at verse 18, the legal line establishing Jesus' throne right through Joseph without claiming his flesh.

Matthew 1:17

Matthew states his own arithmetic, three sets of fourteen, though the third set holds only thirteen names by a plain count unless Jechonias is counted twice, once closing the second set and once opening the third, a solution much of the bench accepts. A widely held tradition ties the number itself to gematria, since the Hebrew letters of David's name, dalet vav dalet, sum to fourteen, making the genealogy spell his name in numbers three times over; the bench names this as a longstanding reading rather than a claim the text itself makes. Either way the shape is deliberate, a genealogy built to be remembered and arriving at one name.

Matthew 1:18-19

Betrothal in first century Judea was legally binding, broken only by divorce, so Mary's pregnancy before the marriage was consummated placed Joseph exactly where Deuteronomy 22 already addressed the case. Matthew states the true cause to the reader before Joseph learns it, of the Holy Ghost, so the coming crisis is read with the answer already known. Called a just man, Joseph resolves to end the betrothal privily rather than expose her to public shame or legal danger, the law's own mercy carried out by a righteous man who still believed himself wronged.

Matthew 1:20

The angel's address, Joseph, thou son of David, is the first beat of the royal title in this book, spoken not to Jesus but to the man whose legal line will carry the throne right to him. This dream is the first of five that guard the child through chapters 1 and 2, revelation moving each time danger presses closest. Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife answers Joseph's fear directly, and the reason given confirms what Matthew already told the reader two verses earlier.

Matthew 1:21

JESUS transliterates the Hebrew Yeshua, itself a shortened form of Joshua, the LORD saves, so the name is already a sentence before the angel finishes it, for he shall save his people from their sins. The salvation named is moral rather than political, from sin rather than from Rome, which the bench reads against the deliverer many in Israel expected of a son of David. His people in Matthew's own Jewish setting reads first as Israel, though the same book will widen the promise to all nations by its final chapter.

Matthew 1:22-23

This is the first of Matthew's twelve fulfillment quotations, and it draws on Isaiah 7:14, spoken originally to King Ahaz as a sign within his own lifetime. The Hebrew almah names a young woman of marriageable age rather than certainly a virgin, while the Greek parthenos that Matthew follows does specify virgin; the bench holds a near fulfillment in Isaiah's own day and this final fulfillment in Christ together rather than trading one for the other. Emmanuel, God with us, is named once here and answered once more at the Gospel's very last words, I am with you alway, framing the whole book between the two.

Matthew 1:24-25

Joseph obeys at once, taking Mary as his wife and naming the child himself, a legal act that grafts Jesus into David's line through adoption rather than blood. Knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son has divided readers for centuries: most Protestant commentators take till and firstborn as ordinary language implying a normal marriage afterward, noting the brothers named at 13:55, while Catholic and Orthodox readers hold Mary's perpetual virginity and read both words as leaving that later question open rather than settled. The chapter that opened with a list of names closes on an act of naming, Joseph calling him JESUS exactly as he was told.
