The Song of Deborah and Barak, among the oldest poetry in Scripture, replays the victory from heaven's side. Jehovah goes forth out of Seir and the earth trembles and the mountains quake; in the days of Shamgar and Jael the highways were unoccupied and travelers walked by byways, till Deborah arose a mother in Israel. Tribes are named with praise or shame: Zebulun and Naphtali jeoparded their lives, while Reuben stayed for the pipings of the flocks amid great searchings of heart, Dan remained in ships, and Meroz is cursed. The stars in their courses fought against Sisera; Kishon swept him away. Jael is blessed above women, and Sisera's mother waits at the lattice for a chariot that will not come.
