Job 29:1-3

The word parable marking Job's speech recurs from 27:1, the term the ancient versions use for a weighty didactic discourse rather than a fable, as Gill notes, signaling that the final defense opens as formal argument rather than complaint. Job's wish, oh that I were as in months past, names the light itself as evidence: when his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness. Henry reads the candle as the sense of God's favor that once turned Job's darkest paths bright, the very thing his present state has stripped from him.

Job 29:4-6

As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle names closeness with God, not wealth, as the first thing Job says he has lost; Gill reads the secret of God as friendly communication and counsel, the intimacy of Ps 25:14. When the Almighty was yet with me uses Job's habitual name for God in the debate, the word that falls thirty-one of its fifty-seven scriptural occurrences within this book. The butter and oil of verse six are Delitzsch's example of pastoral hyperbole for abundance, a table so full that every step seemed to tread in plenty.

Job 29:7-10

When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street names the elders' bench where legal and civic business was heard, the setting of Ruth 4:1 and Prov 31:23. Delitzsch and Barnes both read the honor Job describes as procedural rather than merely social: young men hid themselves, the aged stood, and the princes refrained talking, laying their hand on their mouth, a formal gesture of deference before a recognized judge. The nobles' tongue cleaving to the roof of their mouth completes a picture of a bench falling silent for one man's word, the authority chapter 22's Eliphaz will later claim Job abused.

Job 29:11-13

When the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me states a double witness for the rescue-catalogue that follows, hearing and sight both testifying in Job's favor. Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him roots his honor in rescue rather than status, and Henry notes Job names the same class of sufferer, the poor and the fatherless, that chapter 22:9 will falsely accuse him of sending away empty. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me, and the widow's heart set singing, is the record Job appeals to before that invented charge is ever spoken.

Job 29:14-17

put on righteousness: I put on righteousness, and it clothed me pictures righteousness as a garment worn rather than a possession held, an image Gill notes Isaiah later gives to salvation itself at Isa 61:10. I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame, a father to the poor extends the rescue catalogue into personal advocacy, and the cause which I knew not I searched out shows a judge going beyond the cases brought to him to find the wrong himself. Delitzsch reads I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth as a shepherd's language, Job's justice pictured as rescue from a predator rather than punishment alone.

Job 29:18-20

Then I said, I shall die in my nest states the false security every reader can see and Job cannot: he speaks this while wholly ignorant of the wager already recorded against him in chapters 1 and 2. Barnes reads the nest and the sand as images of settled permanence, home undisturbed and days beyond counting, the exact opposite of what has already happened by the time Job speaks these words. My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand borrows the archer's figure for strength Gill reads as vigor that seemed, at the time, self-renewing rather than given.

Job 29:21-23

Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel describes counsel received rather than merely honor paid, Job's word carrying practical weight in real decisions. After my words they spake not again, and my speech dropped upon them borrows the gentle-rain figure Moses uses of his own teaching at Deut 32:2, and Delitzsch reads dropped as the word for a settling dew rather than a downpour, counsel that soaked in rather than overwhelmed. They waited for me as for the rain, and opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain names the specific spring rain that ripened the harvest in Palestine, Job's counsel compared to the one rainfall a farmer could least do without.

Job 29:24-25

If I laughed on them, they believed it not, and the light of my countenance they cast not down describes an authority so settled that Job's rare smile needed no defending and his rebuke, when it came, was never returned. I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army closes the chapter naming Job's rule as chosen rather than seized, and Henry notes as one that comforteth the mourners folds even his highest office back into the compassion the whole chapter has been cataloguing. The honor Job recites throughout is measured in what he gave away, the exact ledger chapter 22's invented charges will try to invert.
