Job of Uz ('perfect and upright, one that feared God, and turned away from evil') is greatest of all the children of the east: seven sons, three daughters, herds in thousands, and burnt-offerings offered early in case his children sinned in their hearts. Then the scene lifts to the throne, where the sons of God present themselves before Jehovah and Satan comes among them: 'Doth Job fear God for nought?' Four messengers arrive in one day: Sabeans, the fire of God, Chaldeans, a great wind from the wilderness. Job rends his robe and worships: 'Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah' (1:21).
