Bones dragged from the tombs and spread before the sun and moon they served. Judah holds fast deceit and refuses to return, while the stork, the turtle-dove, the swallow and the crane keep the times appointed them: 'but my people know not the ordinance of Jehovah.' The lying pen of the scribes has worked falsehood; peace, peace is proclaimed again over a mortal wound. Harvest ends without rescue: 'The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved' (8:20). And then the prophet's own broken cry: 'Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?'
