Jeremiah 21:1-2

when king Zedekiah sent unto him: Zedekiah's own delegation, a different Pashur from the one in chapter 20 and the priest Zephaniah with him, comes asking Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord as Nebuchadrezzar's army closes in on the city. Their hope is stated plainly, that the Lord will deal with them according to all his wondrous works and make the king withdraw, the same kind of deliverance Hezekiah received from Sennacherib a century earlier. The request assumes the outcome before it asks the question, treating Jeremiah as a channel for the answer they already want rather than for whatever the Lord actually says.

Jeremiah 21:3-7

Then said Jeremiah unto them: The answer reverses everything the delegation hoped for, the Lord turning back the very weapons in the defenders' hands and gathering the Chaldean army into the middle of the city rather than driving it away. Verse 5 takes the exodus language of an outstretched hand and a strong arm, the formula of Israel's deliverance at Exodus 6:6, and turns it against Jerusalem itself, the Lord now fighting as the enemy rather than the rescuer. Zedekiah and whoever survives the pestilence, sword and famine are handed to Nebuchadrezzar with no pity and no mercy promised, the harshest terms given to any king in the book.

Jeremiah 21:8-10

the way of life, and the way of death: The choice set before the people echoes Deuteronomy 30:19's own way of life and way of death, but the terms are reversed from anything Deuteronomy asked, since here survival lies in leaving the city rather than defending it. Staying inside Jerusalem to resist the siege means death by sword, famine or pestilence, while going out and surrendering to the Chaldeans is named as the path to life, a message that reads as treason to the city's own defenders even as Jeremiah delivers it as the Lord's word. The Lord states his own intention without qualification, I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, fire named as the end already decided.

Jeremiah 21:11-12

touching the house of the king of Judah: The word turns from the city to the royal house specifically, addressed as the house of David rather than by Zedekiah's own name, a reminder of the dynasty's original charge. The command is the standard prophetic demand for justice, execute judgment in the morning and deliver the oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor, the same call the earlier prophets made before any threat of exile. The warning attached to it is fire that none can quench, kindled by the fury the court's own conduct provokes, judgment still framed as answerable to how the king acts even this late in the siege.

Jeremiah 21:13-14

O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain: Jerusalem is addressed by its own terrain, inhabitant of the valley and rock of the plain, a city that trusted the hill and ravine around it as much as any wall, its confidence stated in its own taunt, who shall come down against us, or who shall enter into our habitations. The Lord answers the boast on its own ground, punishing according to the fruit of your doings rather than the strength of the position, and kindling a fire in the forest that will devour everything around it. Commentators read the forest as the cedar-built palace and temple structures the city depended on as much as its rock, the same wooded architecture named later at 22:6-7, judgment reaching the very things Jerusalem trusted to keep it safe.
