Jacob, here also called Jeshurun, hears Jehovah's reassurance: Spirit poured on the seed like water on thirsty ground, so that individuals will subscribe their hands to Jehovah's name. The King of Israel declares, "I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God," challenging any rival to foretell what is coming. An extended satire then follows the idol from workshop to shrine: the smith labors till faint, the carpenter measures with line and compass, a man plants a cedar, burns half for bread and roast, and worships the residue, never asking, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?" Jehovah blots out transgressions like a cloud, summons heavens, earth, mountains, and forest to sing, frustrates diviners while confirming his servants' word, and names Cyrus "my shepherd," who will order Jerusalem rebuilt and the temple's foundation laid.
