Isaiah 38:1-3

Set thine house in order: Isaiah brings a death sentence with no conditional attached, set thine house in order, for thou shalt die, and not live, and Hezekiah's answer is neither argument nor resignation but prayer, his face turned to the wall away from the court around his bed. His plea rests on covenant walking, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, a claim to sincerity rather than sinlessness, as the older writers read it. Henry notes the weeping is recorded without a word of rebuke attached to it, the king's grief received rather than corrected.

Isaiah 38:4-6

the word of the Lord to Isaiah: The sentence is reversed before Isaiah has left the palace, the God of David thy father named as the ground of the answer, tying Hezekiah's healing to the same covenant that guaranteed the city's deliverance in the chapter before this one. Fifteen years are added by number, not left vague, and the promise to defend the city repeats what chapter 37 had already accomplished, joining Hezekiah's personal deliverance to Jerusalem's. Barnes reads the pairing of the two promises in one breath as deliberate, the king's life and the city's safety bound together in a single word.

Isaiah 38:7-8

this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord: The sign chosen is the shadow on the sun dial of Ahaz reversing ten degrees, an instrument named for the king whose reign gave Judah its darkest years, now made the stage for an undeniable reversal. The mechanics are read two ways by the bench, some holding a direct miracle in the heavens themselves, others reading a phenomenon localized to the light falling on the dial's own steps, and the older writers decline to force either reading past what the text states. Delitzsch treats the sign's plainness as the point, a mark any observer in the palace could check for himself rather than a private assurance.

Isaiah 38:9-10

The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah: The heading marks a shift from narrative to the king's own composition, written after recovery rather than during the illness, a psalm of thanksgiving in the form of a lament remembered. I said in the cutting off of my days states the despair as past tense looking back, the gates of the grave and the residue of my years the vocabulary of a man who had already begun counting himself among the dead. Gill notes the writing's honesty, a recovered king recording his worst hour rather than smoothing it into a tidy testimony.

Isaiah 38:11-12

the land of the living: The despair widens from length of life to loss of fellowship, I shall not see the Lord in the land of the living, worship itself among the things death would take, and the images that follow are drawn from the most ordinary trades, a shepherd's tent struck and folded, a weaver's thread cut from the loom. Barnes reads the weaver's image as exact, the finished cloth cut free from the loom being the ancient figure for a life ended before its natural close rather than worn out. The complaint is not that death comes but that it comes cut off, before its own conclusion.

Isaiah 38:13-14

as a lion, so will he break all my bones: The night is measured out in the writing, reckoned till morning, the lion image turning the sickness itself into a predator breaking bones rather than a slow fading, and the same refrain from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me repeats the clock the king watched. The bird images that follow, the crane, the swallow, the dove, carry wordless distress rather than formed speech, mine eyes fail with looking upward the posture of a man who has run out of arguments and can only look. Delitzsch reads the shift from beast to bird as a shift from terror to grief, the fight gone out of the complaint by verse 14.

Isaiah 38:15-16

I shall go softly all my years: The turn in the writing comes without transition, he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it, the same God who sent the sentence now credited with sending the recovery, and the king answers with a resolve to walk humbly rather than triumphantly through the years given back. O Lord, by these things men live states a theology of affliction as the thing that teaches life its value, the bitterness itself named as part of what taught him. Henry reads verse 16 as Hezekiah's own request restated as praise, so wilt thou recover me answered before it is finished being asked.

Isaiah 38:17

cast all my sins behind thy back: The bitterness itself is renamed as love, thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption, the sickness read backward from the recovery as an act of care rather than only judgment. The image of sin cast behind the back, out of the line of sight rather than merely forgiven on paper, is one of the Old Testament's plainest pictures of removed guilt, and the bench reads it alongside Micah's casting into the depths of the sea as the same vocabulary of forgiveness. Gill notes the verse joins physical and moral deliverance in one sentence without separating them.

Isaiah 38:18-19

The grave cannot praise thee: The writing states its own theology of the dead plainly, the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee, they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth, a claim the older writers read as the limited view available to Old Testament saints before the resurrection made the case fuller, rather than a denial of any life beyond death. Against that silence stands the chapter's most quoted line, the living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day, praise claimed as the business of the living specifically, and passed on, the father to the children shall make known thy truth. Barnes reads the whole unit as motive for the healing requested, a king arguing that his continued praise serves God's glory in a way his silence in the grave could not.

Isaiah 38:20

The Lord was ready to save me: The writing closes on song rather than statement, a vow to sing with stringed instruments all the days of life in the house of the Lord, worship named as the ongoing answer to a prayer already granted. Henry reads the vow as public rather than private, the temple named as the place the praise belongs, tying the personal recovery back to the house where the nation itself had just been delivered in the chapter before. The verse turns the entire writing from complaint into a resolved song, closing the pit-to-praise arc the composition has carried from verse 10.

Isaiah 38:21-22

a lump of figs: The narrative resumes after the writing with the ordinary means used alongside the extraordinary promise, a lump of figs laid as a plaister on the boil, a remedy the bench reads as a real medical application rather than a magic charm, the healing accomplished through means rather than in spite of them. Hezekiah's own question, what is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the Lord, is the request the shadow on the dial answered, named here at the chapter's close as the reason for the sign given earlier. Gill reads the two details together as proof against reading the recovery as instantaneous apart from any process, the fig applied and the days still needed before the king could go up to the temple.
