Hebrews 1:1-2

God spoke to Israel through many prophets across many centuries, in fragments and figures, but in these last days he has spoken in a Son, the sermon's own opening contrast between the old revelation's variety and the new revelation's finality. The Son through whom God speaks is named heir of all things and agent of creation in the same breath, by whom also he made the worlds, so that the one who ends the ages is the one who began them. Matthew Henry reads the two clauses together as the whole argument's thesis, that the gospel is God's last word because it is his Son's word.

Hebrews 1:3

Three descriptions of the Son follow in one sentence: the brightness of his glory, apaugasma, the shining forth rather than a reflected light; the express image of his person, charakter, the exact impress of a seal; and the one upholding all things by the word of his power, sustaining as well as creating. The verbs then move from eternity to time, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down, priestly work finished in a single stroke rather than repeated at an altar. No angel and no Aaronic priest ever sat; the sitting itself is the letter's first hint of the once for all thread the whole book will trace.

Hebrews 1:4-5

Being made so much better than the angels opens the letter's spine, the first of the better thread's twelve appearances, and the comparison is not of nature only but of the name and rank the Son inherits by right. The proof is two citations no angel ever received: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee, Psalm 2's coronation address, and I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son, God's word to David of Solomon's line in 2 Samuel 7:14. Both texts speak first of an earthly king and reach their full sense only in great David's greater Son, sonship here naming rank and office rather than a beginning to exist.

Hebrews 1:6

The firstbegotten brought into the world most naturally reads as the incarnation or the resurrection presentation, and the citation, let all the angels of God worship him, commands the highest court in heaven to bow before the newcomer among them. The words are not in the Hebrew of Deuteronomy 32:43 but stand in the Greek Septuagint and were later confirmed in a Dead Sea Scrolls fragment of the same verse, a genuine case where the Old Testament text tradition split and the New Testament writer followed the wider attested reading. Worship, proskuneo, offered to the Son by angelic order settles what the chapter is building toward, that a mere creature does not receive it.

Hebrews 1:7

Of the angels he saith turns from the Son's rank to the angels' own nature, and the citation from Psalm 104:4 names them spirits and a flame of fire, servants defined by function and by an element that itself changes. The grammar is looser than English shows; the Hebrew may be read either as God making winds his messengers or as making his messengers like winds, and both readings keep angels as changeable servants rather than the Son's equals. Everything about the angels in this verse is motion and service, while nothing about the Son in the verses framing it is either.

Hebrews 1:8-9

Unto the Son he saith turns the address itself around: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, Psalm 45's royal wedding song quoted so that the Father calls the Son God directly, the strongest deity text in the chapter's catena. An older rendering, thy throne is God, treats the noun as a description of the throne's foundation rather than a title for its occupant, but the Greek word order and the verse's own parallel, therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee, both favor the direct address kept by the Authorized Version. Verse 9 then holds both natures together in one breath, righteousness loved and anointed by God, even thy God, the Son addressed as God and as one who has a God.

Hebrews 1:10-12

And thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth applies Psalm 102:25-27, a psalm addressed to the eternal Creator, directly to the Son, heaven and earth judged temporary and changeable while he alone remains the same. The created order wearing out like a garment and being folded up like a vesture pictures the world's end without alarm, an ordinary act for one who made it in the first place. Thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail closes the citation on the Son's own eternity, the ground the letter will later stand on at 13:8, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Hebrews 1:13-14

But to which of the angels said he at any time returns the refrain that framed the whole catena, and the seventh and climactic citation is Psalm 110:1, sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool, the verse the letter returns to at 10:12-13 and the most quoted Old Testament text in the whole New Testament. No angel is ever invited to sit at God's right hand; angels instead are all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation, servants dispatched on behalf of the very people the Son died to save. The chapter that opened with God speaking by prophets and by his Son ends with the Son enthroned and the angels employed, the whole argument's shape given in miniature before the first warning in chapter 2 begins.
