Summary

John the Baptist, son of the priest Zechariah and Elizabeth, was the forerunner of Christ, the Elijah who was to come, whose baptism in the wilderness announced that the kingdom was at hand. Jesus said of him that among those born of women none had risen greater than John (Matthew 11:11).
