on Zechariah 7:4-7
The LORD answers the fasting question with questions. He asks whether their fasts “for these seventy years” were “really for Me”, and whether their eating and drinking was “simply for yourselves”. He points back to the words proclaimed “through the earlier prophets” while Jerusalem was “populous and prosperous”.
