So Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation of Israel

on Numbers 8:20-23

Verse 20 names “the whole congregation of Israel” among the doers and records the act in the words of the command. Adam Clarke observes that men so solemnly given to God still could not come near until “Aaron also made atonement for them”. Verse 22 lets them in to their work, and the order has held since verse 6, cleansing, presenting, sacrifice, then service.

He must sprinkle the water of purifying upon them, which was prepared by divine direction. This signified the application of the blood of Christ to our souls by faith, to purify us from an evil conscience, that we may be fit to serve the living God. It is our duty to cleanse ourselves, and God's promise that he will cleanse us.
