If God's grace provide that men shall have ability according to their work, man's prudence should take care that men have work only according to their ability. The aged are most fit for trusts, and to keep the charge; the younger are most fit for work, and to do the service.

on Numbers 8:24-25

Numbers 4:3 set the Levite’s entry at thirty, this verse sets it at “twenty-five”, and the text leaves the difference unexplained. Adam Clarke and John Gill carry the Jewish reading that the young Levite trained from twenty-five and served from thirty.

Matthew Henry notes that the phrase here speaks of the man of fifty returning from the warfare, the army language used of his entry. He draws from it that men should be given work according to their strength. The veteran left the ranks and stayed in the camp.
