Commentary

4 notes on this verse
The Levites could only undertake their duties Num. 3; 4 after the formal exchange of the Levites for the first-born Num 3:44-51. The distinction between the “consecration” of the priests Lev. 8 and the less solemn “purification” Num 8:21 of the Levites is marked. These rites of purification are similar to those incumbent on the priests of Egypt.

This site's exposition

he set up the lamps

on Numbers 8:3-5

Verse 4 describes the lampstand, made “according to the pattern the LORD had shown Moses”. Hebrews 8:5 quotes the same command from Exodus 25:40 to read the sanctuary as a shadow of heaven.

Again the LORD spoke to Moses

John Gill reports Aben Ezra's reason for joining this word to the lamps: Aaron tended the lamps himself, and the Levites did the rest. Albert Barnes adds that the Levites began only after the firstborn were exchanged at Numbers 3:44-51. Barnes compares their cleansing with the rites of Egypt's priests.

And the Lord spake unto Moses,.... the same time the order about lighting the lamps was given; and this section is joined to the former, Aben Ezra thinks, to show that Aaron employed himself in lighting the lamps, but in the rest of the services the Levites helped him, and stood before him to do what he commanded them: they were ordered to be taken and given to Aaron before; and they were numbered, and their services appointed to each division of them; and now they are ordered to be ordained and consecrated to their office: saying; as follows.
