And Moses did as the Lord commanded
on Numbers 20:27-29
They go up in the sight of all the congregation, so the nation watches the priesthood change hands. Aaron dies on the top of the mount and two men come down where three went up. Deuteronomy 10:6 places his death at Mosera, and readers hold two accounts of that: Mosera as the name of the district with mount Hor a place inside it, or two records of the same stage kept side by side. The mourning runs thirty days, which is the term Israel keeps for Moses at Deuteronomy 34:8.

But although the time of his death was hastened by the divine displeasure as a punishment for his sins, the manner of his death was arranged in tenderness of love, and to do him honor at the close of his earthly service. His ascent of the mount was to afford him a last look of the camp and a distant prospect of the promised land.
