5 notes on this verseOr perhaps one was the account of them when they set out from Babylon with Zerubbabel, the other when they came to Jerusalem. The sum totals are all just the same there and here, except of the singing-men and singing-women, which there are 200, here 245.

Eighteen verses run through clan after clan, each counted by its ancestor's name and a number. The register works by descent through the father's line. A list that reads as bare arithmetic is doing legal work, fixing each household's place in Israel by the name it can prove.

Bigvai's descendants number 2,067 here and 2,056 at Ezra 2:14. The same name stands among the leaders of verse 7, and Uthai and Zaccur brought seventy more of the family with Ezra at Ezra 8:14. Bigvai seals at 10:16.
