4 notes on this verseOr perhaps one was the account of them when they set out from Babylon with Zerubbabel, the other when they came to Jerusalem. The sum totals are all just the same there and here, except of the singing-men and singing-women, which there are 200, here 245.

Eighteen verses run through clan after clan, each counted by its ancestor's name and a number. The register works by descent through the father's line. A list that reads as bare arithmetic is doing legal work, fixing each household's place in Israel by the name it can prove.

The Elam family counts 1,254, matching Ezra 2:7 exactly. The same figure returns at verse 34 for the other Elam, which points to two clans bearing one name. Six men of Elam appear among those with foreign wives at Ezra 10:26.
