The named men of Judah trace through Perez to four hundred sixty eight valiant men, and the named men of Benjamin trace through Sallu to nine hundred twenty eight, more of that tribe settled in the city than of Judah. Two officers close the list, Joel the son of Zichri as overseer and Judah the son of Senuah as second over the city, a chain of command set over the register the moment the names run out. Genealogy here does legal and military work at once: these are the households able to prove their place and the men counted fit to defend it.
