the villages, with their fields
on Nehemiah 11:25-36
The chapter widens from Jerusalem's numbered households to the villages beyond it: Judah's towns run south from Kirjath-arba to Beersheba and the valley of Hinnom, ground that included Hebron recovered under its old name after the exile, and Benjamin's towns run north from Geba through Michmash and Anathoth to Lod and the valley of craftsmen. The land, not the city alone, is repopulated, and the register says so town by town. The chapter's closing line folds the Levites back into both tribes' territory, divisions in Judah and in Benjamin, ending a roll that opened with the holy city and finishes with the whole province settled.
