And you shall write distinctly upon these stones

Barnes takes the letters as cut into the stone with plaster laid over them to guard them from weather. How much was written is an old question. Gill allows a summary of the laws or only the Ten Commandments, Henry reports readers who took it for Deuteronomy or for chapters 12 to 26, and Barnes counts all the laws given through Moses.

Let this help be set up for a witness, like that memorial of the covenant between Laban and Jacob, which was nothing but a heap of stones thrown hastily together, upon which they did eat together in token of friendship ( Gen. xxxi.
