Jehoiada has Athaliah taken away from the temple. The priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD”. She is put to death at “the entrance of the Horse Gate to the palace grounds”, outside the boundary the whole chapter has guarded.

Athaliah dies at “the entrance of the Horse Gate to the palace grounds”. Second Kings 11:16 describes it as the way the horses entered the palace, and Clarke points the reader to that account. The usurper of six years dies outside the temple, the ground she had defiled.
