6 notes on this verseThose who, through grace, are brought to experience the delights of communion with God will say that the one-half was not told them of the pleasures of Wisdom's ways and the advantages of her gates. Glorified saints, much more, will say that it was a true report which they heard of the happiness of heaven, but that the thousandth part was not told them, 1 Cor. ii.

She has already heard the fame; now she sees a whole working court, the table, the servants seated, the ministers attending, the cupbearers' array, and the ascent by which Solomon went up to the house of the Lord, and it leaves her with no more spirit in her, an idiom for astonishment past words. Her own verdict follows at verse 7, the half was not told me, admitting that report, however true, could not carry what sight did. Order, not oratory, is what finally overwhelms her, an entire household running in wisdom.

John Gill hears relief in her words. The queen had thought the report of Solomon's wisdom overstated, and now she found it true. Caesarius of Arles pressed the same test on monks whose good name had spread, that the life should match the report.
