Issachar's list runs four generations deep with a troop count at each stage, closing at eighty seven thousand fighting men reckoned by genealogy. Adam Clarke notes that Issachar, Benjamin and Asher are the only three tribes whose David-era musters survive in this record, a detail Chronicles alone preserves. Gill traces the large numbers to polygamy, the tribe's many wives and sons named outright at verse four.

This large increase was owing to the practice of polygamy, as well as the fruitfulness of the women. A plurality of wives, though tolerated among the Hebrews, was confined chiefly to the great and wealthy; but it seems to have been generally esteemed a privilege by the tribe of Issachar, "for they had many wives and sons" [1Ch 7:4].
