The Lord blessed the house of Obed-edom - That this man was only a sojourner at Gath, whence he was termed Gittite, and that he was originally a Levite, is evident from 1Ch 15:17, 1Ch 15:

How shall I bring the ark of God home to me

on 1 Chronicles 13:12-14

David's courage turns to fear, and the ark stops three months short of Jerusalem, turned aside into the house of Obed-edom, called here the Gittite for the Philistine town of Gath. Later chapters identify him as a Levite and a gatekeeper, 15:18, 24 and 16:38, so the household that receives the ark next is not the stranger the title first suggests. The LORD blesses that house and everything in it, and the blessing becomes David's proof that the ark itself was never the danger, only the manner of carrying it. The second attempt, and the doctrine that governs it, wait for chapter 15.
