Psalm 91

Psalms 91:1-2

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty opens the psalm with two pictures of nearness, a hidden place and a shadow, before either God's name or the singer's own is given. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in him will I trust turns that description into personal confession, the singer answering the opening claim with his own mouth. The bench reads the shift from third person to first as the psalm's own pattern throughout, a promise stated and then owned.

Psalms 91:3-4

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence names two dangers a bird cannot see and a body cannot fight, the hidden trap and the unseen disease. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust reaches for the picture of a mother bird sheltering her young, the same figure the Lord uses of Jerusalem in the Gospels. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler pairs two pieces of armor, one covering the whole body and one carried in the hand, with the ground of both named as truth rather than luck.

Psalms 91:5-6

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day answers the two halves of the clock, the fear hidden in darkness and the danger seen coming in daylight. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday repeats the pairing with disease and disaster, four dangers named across two verses so that no hour is left uncovered. Gill reads the fourfold list as deliberately total, night and day, unseen and seen, rather than a catalogue of specific named threats.

Psalms 91:7-8

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand puts mass casualty on both sides of the singer, but it shall not come nigh thee holds him apart from it without explaining why. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked makes the singer a witness rather than a victim, watching a judgment that passes him by. The promise is not read as immunity from all danger everywhere, and the bench sets it alongside the psalm's own conditions in verses 1 and 9, dwelling in the secret place and making the Lord one's own habitation.

Psalms 91:9-10

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation restates the psalm's condition in plain terms, the promises that follow answer a life actually lived in that shelter rather than a claim made from outside it. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling extends the protection from the person to the household. Wesley reads the verse as addressed to the one who has already made God his dwelling, not a blanket exemption offered regardless of that condition.

Psalms 91:11-12

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways is the verse the devil quoted to the Lord in the wilderness at Luke 4:10-11, and the quotation stops short of in all thy ways, the very words that tie the promise to a life lived in God's own paths rather than to a leap staged to test them. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone completes the promise the tempter borrowed and twisted into a dare. The commentators from Henry onward make the same point from the tempter's own mouth: Scripture can be quoted accurately and still used dishonestly, the condition cut away and the promise kept, which is the canon's own proof that quotation is not exposition.

Psalms 91:13

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder, the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet pairs four creatures, a lion by strength and an adder by stealth, a young lion and a serpent named dragon in the King James, danger seen and danger hidden. Spurgeon reads the verse as promising authority over the worst the created order can bring against a life sheltered in God, stated in the psalm's own words rather than tied to any one enemy named elsewhere in Scripture. Any reading that fastens the verse to a specific spiritual enemy beyond that belongs to tradition, and is named as such.

Psalms 91:14-16

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him shifts the voice for the psalm's last verses from the singer's confession to God's own first person promise, answering the trust described across verses 1 through 13. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him, I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him, and honour him piles five first person verbs onto the one who calls, presence promised before rescue and honor after it. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation closes the psalm on the same span the previous psalm measured in threescore years and ten, life itself named as the gift and salvation as its crown.
