Proverbs 6:1-5

The chapter opens on a scenario rather than a maxim, a son who has become surety for another by striking hands on a pledge and is now snared by his own promise. The father's advice is urgent rather than theoretical, go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend, give not sleep to thine eyes until the debt is settled, because delay only lets the danger grow. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hunter pictures escape as something to be done at once and without dignity spared, since safety matters more than pride here.

Proverbs 6:6-11

The sluggard is sent to school under an insect rather than a teacher, since the ant works without a guide, overseer, or ruler to compel her, storing food in summer for a need she has not yet felt. The rhetorical question, how long wilt thou sleep, presses the son with the ant's example already standing as the answer he cannot escape. The little sleep, a little slumber repeated three times mimics the sluggard's own excuse making, and poverty is pictured arriving not gradually but as a traveler and an armed man, unannounced once it comes.

Proverbs 6:12-15

The naughty person is drawn through body language before a single word of speech, winking eyes, feet that speak, fingers that teach, a whole vocabulary of signals used to deceive without ever committing to plain words. Frowardness in the heart is named as the source, and mischief and discord are named as the fruit, the same inside-to-outside order the chapter used earlier of the heart's issues. His judgment matches his method, calamity that comes suddenly on a man who spent his life in hidden signals, broken without remedy because no warning ever reached him in time.

Proverbs 6:16-19

Six things, yea seven, is a numerical form used elsewhere in the wisdom literature, naming a full list and then adding one more item to press past a round number into completeness. The list moves from a look, a proud look, to a final act, discord sown among brethren, tracing sin from the eyes down through the tongue, hands, heart, and feet before it settles in the community itself. Discord among brethren closing the list echoes the naughty person of the previous unit, and the commentators read the placement as deliberate, the private deceiver's habit named as the very thing the Lord abhors.

Proverbs 6:20-23

The chapter turns back to the father's ordinary appeal before it resumes its warning against adultery, naming both parents as teachers whose commandment and law are to be bound on the heart and tied about the neck like a worn ornament. The threefold promise, leading when the son goes, keeping when he sleeps, talking with him when he wakes, pictures instruction as a constant companion rather than a rule consulted only in crisis. Calling the commandment a lamp and the law a light sets up the very image the son will need in the verses that follow, since it is this light he is warned not to trade away.

Proverbs 6:24-26

The lamp and light of the previous verses are given a specific purpose, to keep the son from the evil woman and the flattery of her tongue, tying the surrounding unit together. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart locates the danger at the level of desire rather than only action, since the eyelids are named as a weapon before any deed is done. The two costs are contrasted sharply, reduced to a piece of bread on one side and hunted for the precious life on the other, a loss of dignity set against a loss that reaches the soul itself.

Proverbs 6:27-29

Two questions expecting the same obvious answer, fire kept in the clothing and feet walked over coals, both certain to burn, are set up only to be applied directly to the man who goes in to his neighbour's wife. The logic is not moral persuasion so much as a claim about cause and effect, that this particular sin carries its consequence built into the act itself the way heat carries burning. Whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent closes the comparison without qualification, naming a certainty rather than merely a likelihood of harm.

Proverbs 6:30-31

The father inserts a comparison case to sharpen the point rather than to excuse theft: even a hungry thief, judged with some sympathy for the need behind the crime, still pays sevenfold and can lose the whole substance of his house if caught. The comparison is deliberately unfavorable to the adulterer that the next verses describe, since hunger at least explains a thief's motive while no such necessity drives the man who goes after his neighbour's wife. Gill reads the sevenfold penalty as the ordinary restitution law standing behind the illustration, named here to measure a debt that adultery cannot repay in kind.

Proverbs 6:32-35

Where the thief's penalty could be paid and the matter closed, adultery is named as a debt that destroys the soul of the one who commits it and leaves a reproach that shall not be wiped away, a wound with no restitution schedule. The husband's jealousy is called the rage of a man, and the chapter states plainly that no ransom and no multiplied gift will buy him to content, breaking the pattern the thief's sevenfold payment just established. The unit that opened on deliver thyself as a roe closes on a debt from which there is no delivering, the cost accounting the father promised at its start.
